Advocating for Our Children: Tatjyana Elmore Speaks Out on After-School Funding

At BCDI-Atlanta, we understand that after-school programs are more than just extracurricular—they are lifelines for families, support systems for educators, and safe spaces where children can learn, grow, and thrive beyond the classroom. That’s why we’re proud to spotlight our President, Tatjyana Elmore, who recently appeared on Atlanta News First to speak truth to power regarding proposed federal cuts to after-school funding.

As part of a growing chorus of educators, advocates, and community leaders across the nation, Tatjyana voiced concern over the White House’s delay in releasing critical funds that support after-school and out-of-school time (OST) programs. These programs are especially important in communities of color, where access to quality educational support outside of school hours is not always guaranteed.

“These are not just programs,” Tatjyana emphasized in her interview. “They are lifelines for working families—particularly Black families—who depend on them for educational enrichment, social development, and safety.”

Tatjyana highlighted how after-school initiatives help close opportunity gaps, provide access to STEM, the arts, literacy support, and mental health resources, and foster positive developmental outcomes. For many children, particularly those in underserved areas, these programs are a key ingredient to long-term academic success and emotional well-being.

BCDI-Atlanta stands in solidarity with educators and families demanding continued investment in OST programming. The federal government must prioritize equitable funding strategies that uplift all children—especially those historically left behind.
