Meet Our Community Leadership Awards Honorees

The Community Leadership Awards is an opportunity for BCDI-Atlanta to award professionals and advocates who are leading efforts to improve and advance the quality of life for black children and their families through education and advocacy in our six focus areas — early care and education, literacy, family engagement, child welfare, public policy, and health and wellness.

Policy Award

An extraordinary activist who engages the community in addressing political and civic matters affecting Black children and families.


Early Care & Education Award

An extraordinary early education professional who coordinates programs and training to increase the high-quality culturally and racially diverse workforce across the birth-age eight continuum.


Health and Wellness Award

An extraordinary leader who coordinates and promotes culturally relevant health, nutrition and preventative care practices among families.


Family Engagement Award

An extraordinary leader who engages stakeholders from diverse settings and coordinates family empowerment outreach, programs and activities that build partnerships and equip families with information and resources.


Literacy Award

An extraordinary leader who coordinates programs, activities, and/or training in diverse settings to ensure reading proficiency by the end of 3rd grade.


Child Welfare Award

An extraordinary leader who promotes the improvement of child welfare and coordinates outreach, programs, and/or activities that focus on prevention and effective, supportive, culturally competent care of children in all settings.


Dr. Asa G. Hilliard Award

An outstanding community activist who demonstrates a history of commitment, engagement and leadership in two or more of our focus areas and meets the following criteria:

  • BCDI-Atlanta Member for 5+ years

  • Supports the affiliate in goal attainment and fundraising efforts


Influencer Award

An extraordinary leader who demonstrates a history of contributing resources on behalf of Black children and families and is dedicated to guiding, empowering, and mentoring in Black communities.


Each year, the Influencer Award is named in honor of a community leader who has made a significant impact in Black communities during the previous or current year. Our 2020 Influencer Award is named in memory of Rep. John Lewis.


Emerging Leader Award

A young professional who demonstrates remarkable community leadership and advocacy in one of our six focus areas and meet the following criteria:

  • Age 40 or under

  • Currently holds a leadership position at a company, agency or school

  • Productive Scholar (must have completed ONE of the listed activities within the last two years)

  1. Conference speaker/presenter on topic(s) related to one of our six focus areas, OR

  2. Contributing author to a grant proposal for a community initiative, piece of legislation, or publication (peer-reviewed paper, article, book chapter or book) related to one of our six focus areas, OR

  3. Funder or Leader of community initiative related to one of our six focus areas


Stellar Student Award

A college student who demonstrates remarkable community leadership and advocacy in one of our six focus areas and meets the following criteria:

  • Current BCDI-Atlanta Student Member

  • Currently enrolled in one of Georgia’s technical colleges or institutions of higher education (undergraduate or graduate program)

  • Must be nominated by faculty or staff at the enrolled institution

  • Productive Scholar (must have completed ONE of the listed activities within the last two years)

  1. Conference speaker/presenter on topic(s) related to one of our six focus areas, OR

  2. Contributing author to a grant proposal for a community initiative, piece of legislation, or publication (peer-reviewed paper, article, book chapter or book) related to one of our six focus areas


President’s Award

An outstanding BCDI-Atlanta member who demonstrates consistent commitment, engagement and leadership in the affiliate and meets the following criteria:

  • Current BCDI-Atlanta Member

  • Regularly attends quarterly affiliate meetings and events

  • Supports the affiliate in goal attainment and fundraising efforts
